Swimmer Rikako Ikee earned a berth in the 2024 Paris Olympics on March 18 by placing second in the women’s 100-meter butterfly finals at the qualifying trials.

This will be her third consecutive Olympics but her first in an individual event since her leukemia diagnosis in 2019.

After the race, Ikee said: “I am really happy. I’m satisfied with myself right now to have won a ticket to Paris.”

Mizuki Hirai, 17, won the race at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre with a time of 56.91 seconds, followed by Ikee, 23, at 57.30 seconds.

Both swimmers surpassed the standard of 57.34 set by the Japan Swimming Federation for sending athletes to the Paris Games.

Ikee competed in the 100-meter butterfly at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics when she was 16 and finished fifth.

After moving to the top ranks in the world, she was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2019.

While fighting the disease, she returned to competition and competed in the relay event at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Although she won the 100-meter butterfly in the selection round, she was unable to surpass the standard time and missed out on the individual event for the Tokyo Olympics.

She moved her training base to Australia in October last year.
